The historic victory of actor-turned-politician Vijay in the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu – with his party TVK falling just shoring majority mark – has put major focus on government formation in the state.
At present, the TVK remains busy to put together an alliance to take its 108 seats (which will come down to 107 when Vijay resigns from Trichy East) past the majority mark of 118. Even as the five newly-elected MLAs from Congress have extended support – spliting the vintage Congress-DMK alliance – Vijay’s party still falls short by a few seats.

In a major political development that can have far-wider ramifications, a majority of MLAs from the AIADMK have expressed their wish to the party leadership to extend support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form government in the state.

Notably, AIADMK is a part of the BJP-led NDA and contested the Assembly elections against the Congress-DMK alliance.
According to reports, nearly 35 AIADMK MLAs recently reached Rajya Sabha MP CV Shanmugam’s office in Chennai to extend support to Vijay, signalling a rift in the party.
It is being said that these MLAs have requested AIADMK’s Edappadi K Palaniswami to consider an alliance with the TVK, which fell short of the majority mark.
Meanwhile, AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan has clearly stated that the party’s high command will take the decision to join hands with TVK and even ruled out the possibility of a split within the party.
Notably, the AIADMK has shifted its newly elected MLAs to neighbouring Puducherry amid fears of possible poaching attempts by rival camps. The MLAs have been accommodated in a luxury resort. AIADMK won 47 seats in the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.
